The Latest
April 28, 2009 - I got to see the kittens again last week when they got fixed at WAG.  They've got new names, now are Maggie and Smalls.  Maggie was WAG's 5000th surgery.  And you're all invited to WAG's 5000th Celebration, May 3rd.

Cougar's new mom, Valarie, emailed "She is just fabulous.  She gets along real well with our cat Taco.  I am amazed at how she uses her senses to get around.  You almost can't tell she is blind.  She is the most wonderful and affectionate little kitty.  She plays with her toys and loves to eat.  I am going out of town for 2 weeks and will send you pictures when I get back.  My daughter will still be here with Cougar."  And sent along a few pictures.

April 13, 2009- Cougar and The Kids went to their new homes on Friday.  I'm hard at work with WAG's 5000th surgery celebration (wagwag.org) Spay Ship grant proposals (spayship.org) and major upgrade on SNIP's web page (draft at www.sniphouse.org/indexnew.html) and having computer problems.

April 6, 2009- The thing that's such a joy about kittens this age is that, to them, everything is a kitten toy.  Kleenex boxes, trash bags, Cougar's tail, everything.

The problem with kittens this age is that they think everything is a kitten toy.  Power cords, shoes, everything.  And they want to chew on it all.  I guess it's better than puppies who have bigger teeth.

I really ought to take some videos of these guys, the last week I'll have them.  It's just hysterical watching them play.  What they lack in grace, they make up for in enthusiasm.

April 2, 2009- Hide and Seek seems to be the favorite game lately.  The kittens go someplace Cougar can't follow, like the hole in the bottom of this scratching pad, or behind the litter box, then escape out the other way, while Cougar continues to try to reach them, not being able to see where they've gone to.

She's getting bolder about climbing, even getting up on the narrow ledge above my RV's slideout the other day.  And she insists on sleeping across the steps, my only way to get from the bedroom/bathroom part of the RV to the main living area.

No longer are The Kids obligingly going back into the cage to sleep when they're done playing.  Their favorite spot is the couch, now, although they're better at getting up on it than getting back down, usually falling, rather than climbing, but they keep doing it.

I think The Kids are developing that red undercoat, or whatever it is, that their relatives have.  It's really interesting to watch.

- My apologies to our fans that I haven't been updating as often as I'd like.  I'm working on a major upgrade to another web page I do, SNIP's.  You can get a peak at one of my experiments here.

I'm still hard at work weaning.  I think Cougar is letting Cuthbert nurse a lot more than Agatha, and I can guess why.  When I'm trying to hand-feed Agatha, she bites, and hard.  Cuthbert, however, is hard to get to eat solid food because he won't open his mouth and tries to suck it instead.

I had heard that the rescue situation where the kittens came from stemmed from this woman's attempt to breed a Maine Coon of a different color, but I didn't realize what that meant until I did the adoptions at Petsmart this weekend.  (I do this the 4th Saturday of every month, so that means I've had Cougar a month now.  I didn't realize it had been so long.)  So, I met a bunch of other cats from that place, hmm, Luna (who went home with her new people that day), Homer G and D-Lite, who have adoptions pending, Peanut, Tucker and Thompson, who are all available.  Maybe I'll add a page of thier pics, but probably not today.

Anyway, I'm no expert on cat breeds or genetics, but I've read up on them and know more than the average non-breeder.  I've never heard of cats this color and didn't know it was genetically possible.  I'll have to read up on it again to explain this properly. Some of these cats, to varying degrees, but Tucker is the most obvious, are sort of  both red tabbies and brown tabbies.  Normally, you only have those orange and black colors on tortoiseshell cats who are 99% female and it's a very different pattern.  I'm not sure if it's that they're red tabbies with black tips or different types of hairs are different colors or what, but it's quite unusual, and doesn't show up as well in pics.  Although I'm including a pic of Tucker.  His tummy is a very bright red, while his foot pads are black.  If you're in Eugene, do stop by Petsmart and take a look.  There are 5 females from the same group coming in this week, all available for adoption.  And more coming in soon.  Watch WCDC's Petfinder page

March 27, 2009- I have two chairs, a recliner/rocker and an office chair with wheels, and I don't dare sit in either of them when the kittens are loose if I don't know where they both are.  Even when I'm not rocking or rolling (so to speak) I'm still afraid of hurting a kitten if they're in the wrong place when I shift my weight.  To make it worse, my recliner has a squeak that sounds a lot like a kitten in distress, except it's much quieter.

I think these kittens reach the highest decible levels of any kittens I've had.  I worry that when I'm trying to clip their nails, my neighbors may call the cops to complain about the noise.

Cougar no longer comes running when they yell.  I think she's leaving it up to me to feed them when they're hungry.  Her thing these days is finding a place to sleep in a bottleneck, like a stair step, where I'll have to make her move when I'm trying to get somewhere.  And she doesn't appreciate it when I do.

Agatha still needs to learn eating solid foods at each meal, but it's taking less time.  Cuthbert will just not eat solid food if he can help it, spitting it out no matter how skillfully I get it in his mouth.  *argh*
bile, so I'm letting them out for explores.  This is such a fun age they're at, both cute and fun.
